The List...

Or at least the start of a list.  Even though Talmage is still little I can totally tell when he is bored.  He gets destructive.  This also happens to get my attention, which works every time.  Our best days are when I am being creative and involved.  He learns more and we keep the peace.  I do need to say that I am an advocate of kids being creative and entertaining themselves, and not totally relying on mom and dad.  Obviously Talmage is too young for a ton of that but he still can do it.  Example: During FHE we used the Childrens songbook to sing our songs.  This morning he got the book, sat down and starting singing all sorts of songs.  (no real words)  He loved the feedback I gave him and he sang while I took a shower.  That was totally better than other activities he has done while I am in the shower... unrolling the toilet paper, coloring with my eye liner, etc.  Hence the list.  I want to compile a list of activities for all age groups of kids.  Fun things for them to do be it a summer day, snowing, or mom is just too busy.  I want to say in response to, "mom I'm bored", "go look at the list and choose something."  All of you are much more experienced at this and so I want your input.  Here is my start.
  • Color
  • Garden
  • Build a fort
  • Puzzles
  • Nature walk
  • Sing action songs
  • Read books
  • Look at the clouds
  • Swing
  • Color with sidewalk chalk
  • Have a water fight
  • Go to the park
  • Ride bikes/scooters
  • Finger paint
  • Play cars
  • Dress up
  • Have a puppet show
  • Do a craft
  • Walk to the store for an ice-cream cone
  • Write a story
  • Race things down the gutter
  • Bubbles
  • Legos
  • Catch bugs
  • Jump rope
  • Build a snowman
  • Bake cookies for a friend
  • Play dough
  • Play a sport
  • Simon says
  • Mother may I
  • Red light, green light
So, it's a start.  When I was young, if I said I was bored to my mom she would say, "well, let me get a list of chores for you"  suddenly I could find something to do.  What are your ideas?

That's what my mom said too...I like the list so far...How about writing letters or putting a care package together for a friend, missionary, or soldier(if you don't know any I can give you Leslie's address in Iraq) or running through the sprinklers, painting on the sidewalk with water(I got that idea from my cousin and there is no clean-up!), hand stand contests, and playing cards-old maid and go fish for kids.

Love the list idea. I am going to make one for myself so when Jared is being naughty I can go to my list instead of wanting to fling things at him. We pretty much had to read when I was young, my mom had a list of age appropriate books and so thats what we did a lot of. Keep us updated on the list.

That's a great list. One thing I need to get more of are some age appropriate board games and games. Gracie is always asking to play a game. I'll have to look over your list and see if I can think of more ideas. Another thing that really keeps Gracie occupied is "cooking" with playdough, extra ingredients, etc, she could stay busy forever.

So... I would add the make believe stuff like play house, school, restaurant, church. Lately, we've been cleaning up as an activity. I'm surprised how well it goes over. Then again,I think anything that makes them feel involved at a young age is fun for them.
